Mononucleosis
Infectious mononucleosis is often called "Mono," for short. It's a virus infection that affects lymph glands in various parts of the body. It is most common among adolescents and young adults.
Mono is transmitted by saliva so it can be spread by activities such as kissing, sharing a glass, or taking a bite of someone else's food. However, eating utensils can be made safe by washing with ordinary detergent and hot water.
The symptoms of mono include tiredness, sore throat, swollen glands, and low grade fever. But in the early stages, the signs may be so vague that the diagnosis of mono cannot be made on the first visit. Laboratory tests are useful in distinguishing mono from other diseases with similar symptoms, and for detecting possible complications before they become serious.
Complications are generally infrequent, some people do develop mild jaundice or yellowing if the skin. The most serious complication is rupture of an enlarged spleen. However, this happens very rarely. It is caused by rough physical activity or contact sports carried on during the period of illness. For obvious reasons, these should be avoided during the illness.
There is no medication that will cure mono or speed up the healing process. The illness simply runs its course and clears up by itself. The only way to help the healing process is by getting extra rest. The overwhelming majority of people with mono have an illness that may make them feel uncomfortable for several weeks, but will not be a serious threat to their health. If you think you or your child may have mononucleosis you should call your health care provider for advice
