About APDA
The American Parkinson Disease Association, Inc. was founded in 1961 to "Ease the Burden and Find the Cure" for Parkinson's disease and has been continuously growing ever since.

The APDA is by far the largest organization in the U.S. dedicated to fighting Parkinson's disease.

The APDA has financially supported research leading to every major breakthrough in the knowledge and treatment of Parkinson's disease.

The organization focuses its energies on research, patient service, education, increased public awareness and patients advocacy.

The Disease
Parkinson's disease develops when brain functions controlling balance, movement, walking and speech are hindered by damage to specific brain cells resulting in the decrease in the production of a chemical substance - dopamine - which plays a very important role in the transmission of impulses in the brain.

Symptoms of the disease progress from tiredness and weakness in the early stages, to near-total loss of movement control in the later stages.

The symptoms can be treated, in most cases with drugs, but the cause and cure of this disease have yet to be found.
